Plots
The main plot is that the squadron is fighting the empire during their occupation of corasasnt because the empires forces that prevously occupied the planet have gone into hiding and released the deadly Kyros virus which only attacks non humans. The empire is well known for not liking aleins. They are like the modern day Isis, hating anyone that doesn't look like them or believe in what they do and will blindly follow orders just like the nazis and try to eradicate everything but themselves. This is demonstrated in the previous book ( wedges gamble) because they raided a warehouse on the lower levels of corasasnt and kidnapped a bunch of non humans and aliens to test the virus on. The virus would rot the insides of these aliens and kill them slowly while they remained awake and alert for the whole proses leading up to their deaths. The rouge squadron found that large amounts of Bacta ( a healing juice ) can cure it but it takes a lot of it per person and if they are in the late stages, it takes even more. The only problem the rouges face is there is not nearly enough Bacta in their supply to cure an entire planet. They must find more Bacta to help the population being ravaged on corasant. (Chapters 4-29)
The other plot that affects the story was that when the squadron was fighting the empire for control over a strategic position, the squadron didn't have their X-wings to fly, instead they had to use some borrowed ships called head hunters. Corran didn't like this and he really didn't like Tycho messing with his ship. When they were in a dogfight, someone had given the override codes for his ship to the empire and they flew it straight into the ground before Corran could eject. The squadrons commander, Wedge , suspected Tycho of giving the codes to the empire and had him arrested and put on trial for Corrans death. ( they don't know he is alive ) (chapters 38-45)
Another plot the storie follows is the interrogation and escape of Corran from an imperial ship. What he doesn't know is that the ship is hidden in the mountains of corasasnt. The evil imperial commander Loor tries to brainwash him into flying for the empire. They had done research with their mole in rouge squadron to find the best pilot for the job. As they try to force him into flying for the empire, he maintains his sanity but irritates Loor when he was in a simulated dogfight with his old squadron xo, Tycho, and refuses to shoot him down and stops flying all together. Loor then decides to extract info from him instead of trying to make him defect. They severely torture him and then throw him into a prison camp. He manages to escape and learn the real trader in the squadron and it's a race against time to stop the wrong person from being executed and expose the rat.(chapters 45-end of book)

Important themes and symbols
- A symbol in the story that stands out to me is the X-wings. Corran and the squadron are right at home when they're flying aginst the empire in their X-wings. They risk their lives through out the story but when they are the air or space, they are in the most danger and put their trust in the crews who maintain their ships. Corran is the best pilot in the squadron and it really shows when he is flying, even when he was flying a tie fighter ( the empires primary attack aircraft/ship) he dominated the sky's above corasant. Regardless of the fact it was a simulation. He is happiest in the sky, he knows it's his calling: "We are rouge squadron fighter pilots, it's our job to fly and help people anyway we can while on the ground and in the air" ( quote from Corran )
